Friction physics is a highly specialized science, which also involves the study of metal fatigue and wear susceptibility measurement. To reduce this wear and tear, a large number of factories today are producing bearing greases to address the above problem. Selecting appropriate materials to investigate the treatments of surfaces and their subsequent wear and tear due to friction poses a major challenge for automobile engineers and designers. Grease testing is done through machines that enable testing capabilities to be measured using various methods. Two of the most common methods include: using wear-test systems and low speed and high speed, scratch testing and hardness testing at various temperatures. These processes are mainly directed to improving the machinability of a material. Machinability can be defined as the potential of a given material to be converted cost-efficiently and cost-effectively by grinding and turning into a material with a highly effective and strong surface.

Friction testers are of many kinds. They come into the picture when it is necessary to study the amount of friction that is produced when two surfaces are in constant contact. Some of the friction testers that are commonly used for these kinds of studies include: manual controlled abrasion wear tester, count controlled abrasion wear tester and finger abrasion wear and contact tester. Wear and friction tests are done using tribometers and scratch testers. Linear tribometers, high load tribometers and high-pressure tribometers are some of the machines used in this area. The scratch testers are fine instruments and the two principal types are nano scratch testers and micro scratch testers. The main difference between the two types is the latter involves the calculation of the coefficient of friction using very small loads that involve using very small surface areas too. These are also set up and configured to behave like multi-pass scratch testers. Diesel fuel lubricity is a measure of the ability of diesel to reduce wear and tear on mental surfaces that are contact during the period when the engine is running as seen in fuel pumps and fuel injectors. In the case of diesel engines, both-the pumps and injectors are always lubricated by a fuel in ideal conditions. Therefore, the diesel's ability to minimize or reduce the friction in these parts is measured. These studies are very important because there is an urgent need to discover cleaner and more efficient fuels that have a very low environmental impact. These fuels can also increase the efficiency of the engines they are used in to a very great extent. The sulphur content of these fuels needs to be kept under control. The lubricity of these test fuels in rotary distributor pumps is currently under investigation by a large number of research groups. The BOCLE or the ball-on cylinder lubricity evaluator test is one such test that is used commonly.
